Firefighters from Audlem have been tackling a blaze in the roof space of a barn at a Burleydam farm today.

The incident was reported at 5.21am today (Wednesday) on the Whitchurch Road at Burleydam and one fire engine from Audlem, one from Nantwich and a third from Sandbach attended the scene.

A Cheshire Fire Service spokesman said the barn fire covered an area measuring three metres by three metres and involved approximately 10 tons of corn.

All services to the barn were isolated and firefighters went in to tackle the blaze. Two wore breathing apparatus and used two covering jets and a hose reel jet to fight the fire.

A hopper containing 10 tons of dry pellets also became involved in the incident, with the pellets in the top quarter of the hopper smouldering.

Crews had to cut away the base of the hopper and completely remove and extinguish its contents before checking the barn for hotspots.
