Sunday 4th September.

Out to the village after much housework and ironing. To a cold day – and one with the smell of rain in the air. After such a terrible wash out of a day yesterday. Breezy and – sad to say – such an autumnal feel about. We get ready to play at home and this game versus a very strong team. Ellsworth F C . A team atop the league and an amalgam of what was Bank Corner plus others last season.

The Hall so beautifully decorated for a wedding reception last night. (See my photo alongside this ) and as such we use the changing room with access to the hall for our team instead of that of the visitors. Just a move to ensure greater security and the visitors use our garage facility . Will be so proud when we are able to offer the new Annexe for all such activities next season.

Car park rammed once more as over 70 cyclists gather for a 50 mile race. Cars everywhere . They leave to race at 1005hrs but of course all their vehicles here until circa 1245hrs. After our game is over . Bell's of St James give a jolly air to the village under the lowering clouds.

Referee James Tee here for the first time ever., A young man- youngest ever referee for us.
A light touch of precipitation as the wind gets up. We are changed and ready and the opponents all here in their all yellow and black strip looking All the world like a buzz of wasps. I so hope they do not string us!

KICK OFF

At 1055. – We are stretched in numbers with just 3 subs and these three not match fit at all. We lost the toss so we play to the tennis court end. Fast pressure from the off . Connor Baxter in goal this day for us.
(Young Max Youle here again to give his support. He has asked to be part of the team when he is old enough – he is 8 at present and plays in goal. Now playing for Nantwich Vipers)

Opponents a bit brutal in their tackles . Jack McClintock races up field – shoots but it flies across the face of the goal .
Fast and furious is the play – 60/40 in their favour. We give away a penalty. Connor braces himself for the spot kick 0- and saves!! A good portent for us . Perhaps.
End to end stuff, as play is so close. A chance for Andrew Betterley- but it is saved. Really cold day as the wind continues to play down the field. ( A great shame for the RNLI big event at the marina after all the hard work by Rodney Cotterell and his team. How so often does the weather lays a hard hand on weekend events in this country)

Play is so fiercer and I do fear that there may be bookings. Reflex save as Connor stops a certain goal. EFC play well as a team with good controlled passing. A tad physical at times. Play in their favour 60/40.
1133
A goal to them as a melee in our goal mouth allows it . Sad- for we have held our own so far very well.
0-1
A crash of heads and Kyle Doughy has a split forehead./ Taped and bandaged he carries on as Ref. blows for half time. A half in which we held our own well.

SECOND HALF.

1145.
( Max goes to JA's café to get me a cappuccino and a coke fir himself. To warm me up a bit)

1148
They score
0-2

1150
0-3!
David Roberson joins me along with a gift of two match balls from his daughter Kirsty for the Audlem Ladies F C – colour matched to their strip.
and Connor stops a certain goal with a fine save. But EFC so much on top.

1206 .Wind gusting a lot. Cold. Sub played as Jack goes off with injury to his left leg. On comes Alan Brindley – first running for many weeks. "Fisty cuffs" between Connor Jones and their number 2. No bookings

1216
0-4 – so so soft a goal as were cut up- filleted. Dissected. So different from our play in the first half.
Another goal to pile on the misery and we finish 0-5.

Hey ho. Highs and lows are a part of life. We invite all EFC back to the Lord Combermere, our sponsors, for the excellent chips . And they do come in numbers.

Next game is away to Wrenbury on the 11th
