Audlem footballers will have to rethink tactics if they want financial help from Audlem Parish Council.

Local team chairman, Ralph Warburton, appealed to councillors to help cover the £1,000 plus a year it takes to run the team.

But councillors want to check out the club finances in greater detail before it makes any decision on cash aid for the club.

In a letter to the council the chairman spelled out the expenses of running the village team which plays in the Cheshire and Border Counties Sunday Football League.

Paying for the referee alone costs the club £420 a year and then there is £225 for changing rooms hire and £375 for use of the field plus the cost of balls, nets and other expenses. It takes the annual outlay well over the £1,000 mark.

Players pitch in by paying £5 to play each games and even those sitting on the subs bench pay £2 to watch the game. Councillors were told that any support for the club would be gratefully received.

But parish councillors want to learn more about the club's income before they part with any cash. And they say there are plenty of other sports bodies that could be approached for finance. They are to ask for more details of club finances.

The Audlem club was set up in 2012 with 24 players with kit sponsored by the Lord Combermere. The plucky Audlem team is currently languishing near the bottom of the Cheshire and Border Counties' table with twelve points in the bag, having lost 10 of their 14 games this season.

The team's home record is not too bad with 23 goals scored for and 33 goals against but the away record has let then down badly with 47 goals planted in the Audlem net and only three for the local lads.
