It's the Audlem Big Walk this morning Saturday, 21st May from 10.00am. It's a new event for 2011 which, hopefully, will attract many to the enjoyable pursuit of country walking.
Organised by the Audlem Medical Practice Patients' Panel with the assistance of ARS, the Audlem Ramblers Society, it's planned as a sociable walk beside the canal and through the local countryside.
The walk will follow a figure of eight route so you choose how far you go. The two circular routes are each about three miles long. You can tackle the first three miles and that will bring you back to the village. You can then opt to continue on the second part of the walk making a six mile walk in total.
There's even an option of walking for 1.5 miles northwards and turning off to the Overwater Marina, enjoying some refreshment there and returning to the village on the new boat service, Audlem Lass.
On a recce, all the paths were dry and the local countryside is at its best. Hopefully not tempting fate, the weather forecast for tomorrow is dry and a pleasant temperature for walking. There's a number of stiles on the second circuit of the work but the first part is kissing gates.
Farm tracks then lead eastwards to the beautiful Hankelow Mill and the lane that winds gently up to the A525 at Corbrook. After crossing the road, it's up past the Parkes on a footpath at the field's edge and then right on to Monks Lane. After a short distance, a footpath then crosses the fields to Mill Lane and then it's a return to the village.
The second part of the Figure of Eight is off southwards along the canal towpath to Bagley Lane. It's then eastwards to Wood Orchard Lane and back over via tracks and a footpath to Holmes Bank and then into the village and, hopefully, a well-earned drink.
You could even turn your walk into a fund-raiser for a charity of your choice. If the Audlem Big Walk turns out to be a success, with large numbers joining in, it could become a useful money-raiser in the future.
The Audlem Big Walk replaces the Short-ARS walk for May. Do come along, regular walkers and those not so regular. It's hoped many will take up walking, an ideal way to enjoy the countryside and keep reasonably fit.
Please wear walking or stout boots or trainers, bring a waterproof and a bottle of water.
Local Audlem Walks leaflets will be provided for those that fancy trying some other local routes after, hopefully, enjoying the Audlem Big Walk.
