Aston & District W.I. July 2022 Report

Our President welcomed members and guests to the July meeting of Aston and District W.I. which took place at Aston Chapel on Friday 1st. The meeting began with the reading, by Ann Pye, of a full and comprehensive report of the recent N.F.W.I. meeting held at Liverpool.

It was agreed that four members would take part in the forthcoming darts competition.

Members who went on the trip to the Dorothy Clive Gardens had a lovely time and Rosie, our President, announced that she would offer to host a garden party at her home on Monday 22nd August at 2pm.

This month, the Luncheon Club will meet on Tuesday, 5th July at the Lord Combermere in Audlem at 12.00 noon. The Walking Group will meet on Wednesday,6th July at The Bells of Peover at 10.30am.

A meeting was arranged for Monday, 18th July to finalize details for the Nantwich show.

Our speaker for the evening, one of a team of dedicated volunteers from Shropshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire Blood Bikers, who gave an enlightened report of all the work they do including a short film explaining how Margaret Ryerson formed Emergency Nationwide Assistance in 2008 in order to help groups work together in eams across the country in order to save lives. During the film, a Biker told us how he volunteered as a result of his lifesaving experience and how he now feels he is returning that help.

Amongst their duties are urgent deliveries of medical equipment; breast milk for prematurely born babies, bone marrow and samples to pathology labs and, of course, blood to hospitals. Controllers are also volunteers working from home who organise the bikers and who track their bikes at all times.

Very few people realise that these kind volunteers do not receive any payment for the special work they do including working shifts around the clock. They are not part of the N.H.S and it has been estimated that the running cost of this service would probably be nearly double with the rise in petrol costs. Funded entirely by donations which play a vital part in keeping this amazing service running. The film ended with a most thought-provoking statement: – "One day we may have the ride of your life."

The vote of thanks was given by Cynthia Gorton

The raffle was drawn and prizes were given out after the refreshments. The competition of something 'Red' was won by Ann Pye.

Next month's meeting will take place on Friday 5th August at Aston Chapel at 7.15pm

when the speaker will be Carl Brent "An Entertainer's Life."
