ASET's Ralph Warburton has defended the £5 charge to vehicles participating in the Audlem Festival of Transport ten days ago. A number of car clubs are reported to have been dismayed that, for the first time, they were asked to pay for their entrance.

Ralph insists the charge was necessary this year to avoid canceling the festival altogether. He said: "For the last eight years we have run the festival for free, providing plaques and programmes, which has cost us £2,000 each time. That money is generated out of revenue from the Proms on the Park."

"With the disastrous weather this year we had no funds at all, so the £5 charge became a necessity – either that or we cancel the whole show. We apologise once gain for the charge. It was an exceptional circumstance and we promise it won't happen again."
