ARS walk this Saturday

Next Saturday's ARS (Audlem Ramblers Society) walk is being led by Howard Jones. It will be followed in the evening by the social highlight of the year – the ARS Christmas dinner.
 
Howard writes: The walk on Saturday begins and ends at the pub in Loggerheads and is approximately 6 miles in length over fields and farm track with very few inclines; this is an easy 2 booter.

Turning left out of the pub car park we walk about 200 yards back along the main road, climbing a stile into farmland, skirting a wood until reaching Blore Farm, near Blore Heath site of one of the bloodiest battles which would begin the Wars of the Roses.

The Lancastrians and Yorkists met on a damp Sunday morning in September 1459 and legend has it that Margaret of Anjou watched the battle from the nearby Muckleston church tower only to flee when she realised that her army had lost. A stone cross still stands to this day to mark the spot where the Lancastrian leader is said to have been killed.

Leaving Blore Farm behind we travel along Flash Lane and pass behind Hales Sawmill which, I believe, has absolutely no historical interest and then along a farm track to Nook Farm passing, what is designated, as a Roman Villa. At this point we turn back toward Loggerheads and for the more romantic amongst you, we will venture down Lovers Lane!

A 9.30am start from Audlem car park should mean that we are back in the village early enough for the campanologists in the group to keep their appointment at the church.
