The long ARS (Audlem Ramblers Society) walk this coming Saturday, 9th July, will be an ascent of Arenig Fawr.

This is an easy and satisfying mountain to climb with only a few fairly short rocky bits near the top. On the summit is a memorial to six American aircrew who died when their Flying Fortress bomber crashed into the mountain in 1943.

It is situated north west of Bala by Llyn Celyn just off the A4212. From the summit, with good weather conditions, it is possible to see several notable Welsh mountain ranges: the Rhinogs in the west, Snowdon to the northwest, Clwydian Hills in the northeast, east to the Berwyns, south east to the Arans, and southward to Cadair Idris.

The walk starts from the minor road between the mountain and Llyn Celyn by an old quarry at SH 829392 We walk east along the road before picking up a track that takes us to Llyn Arenig Fawr.

We then ascend quite steeply to Y Castell and pick up a grassy ridge that descends north-eastwards.This takes us directly to the main summit. We cross to a second top by a short ridge and then descend past small lakes to the coll between Arenig Fawr and Moel Llyfnant.

We then pick up a track past Amnodd Wen, an abandoned farm, which leads back to the road. An optional extension takes in the summit of Moel Llyfnant before returning to the valley.

It is a 3 boot walk of 9 miles with 2000 feet of climbing. It's an 8.30am start from Audlem Public Hall car park.
