Yesterday, at 5.20pm, there was another incident on the A525 in Audlem. A truck taking up all the narrow stretch of road past the church wall resulted in a larger People Carrier going in the opposite direction having to reverse. As it did, it crashed into the Post Office causing considerable damage to the vehicle's rear. The truck drove on, almost certainly unaware of trouble left behind in its wake.

Regular readers will be aware of the letter received from the Minister of Transport, Jim Fitzpatrick, after he had been asked to consider de-priming the A525 to reduce the number of HGVs passing through Audlem. His letter was published on Audlem Online on 18th October. In it, he suggested the Parish Plan Group approach numerous public bodies in what would be a very complicated process to try and improve the situation. A reply has now been agreed to the Transport Minister's letter, as follows:

Dear Mr Fitzpatrick

Your letter of 9th October to our constituency MP Stephen O'Brien, following our detailed submission to you to have the A525 through Audlem de-primed, has been considered by us in detail.

You state in your letter that you have Ministerial responsibility for this issue. You will note from our submission that you have been made formally aware of:

1. A serious Health & Safety issue relating to the A525 through Audlem

2. A possible breach of Article 8 of the European Convention providing for the right to respect for the home which has been incorporated into domestic law by the Human Rights Act, introduced by your Government.

As the individual with, according to your letter, Ministerial responsibility for this road, and given the seriousness of these issues, we expect you, not us, to take this issue forward as you and your officials will fully understand the complex decision making process you are in charge of (as described in your letter). We look forward to hearing from you.

More when the Minister's reply is to hand.
