It has been a busy week for the History Society – we have been up to Nantwich museum to discuss collaboration on an exhibition.

They showed us two boxes of material donated to them by the last descendant of the
Bellyse family. At first we could not connect this with our 'own' famous trio: grandfather 'cockfighter' Bellyse, son – eloper with daughter from Highfields – John Bellyse and he of the monument Richard Baker Bellyse.

Some research by Maureen Morgan has now proved there was a connection and it seems that two Bellyse brothers were the doctor for Audlem and also a doctor in Nantwich.

The whole family will be a good topic for further research and talks.

But with WW1 anniversaries looming, I went through some albums of newspaper cuttings lovingly assembled by Bellyse ladies and the results with Audlem connections are going up on the archive.

The latest snippet is a poem about V.A.D. (Voluntary Aid Detachment) nurses trying to get
home to Audlem from Nantwich on a cold foggy night and having to push the car up the hill from Artle Brook.

Visit the Archive from the Homepage banner link to read the poem.
