I would like to put on record my thanks to the adoption and social work teams at Cheshire East Council after they were named 'Local Authority Adoption Service of the Year' at the prestigious British Association of Adoption and Fostering awards.
The honour was in recognition of the collaborative work which is being undertaken working alongside neighbouring councils, to address the shortage of potential adoptive parents.
Nationally, there are around 4,000 children waiting to be adopted and the challenge for all local authorities is to change this landscape by securing enough stable, loving homes for the children in their care.
The Four4Adoption collaboration, which also includes Trafford, Stockport and Tameside, is celebrated as a national success, demonstrating excellent collaborative working and outstanding service both to children in care and potential adopters.
However we still have a real need for more adoptive parents to come forward. We are especially interested in hearing from people who are willing to consider adopting older children as well as sibling groups of two, three or even four children.
One of the main reasons holding people back is confusion about eligibility. Just to be clear: you can still successfully adopt if you are over 40, or already have children. Also, there is nothing stopping people who are unmarried, single or in a same sex relationship.
What matters is a willingness to give children a stable, supportive, caring and loving home. If you are able to do that, we would love to hear from you.
