Thursday, 21st March

March's talk to Audlem History Society will be given by Barry Probin, and is entitled, "The Mosses: Ice Age to Modern Day".

It will be held on Thursday, 21st March, 2024, commencing at 7.30pm, at the Scout and Guide Hall, and everyone is welcome to attend (visitors please pay £4 on the door).

Barry is a volunteer for Natural England at Fenn's, Whixall and Bettisfield Mosses, and he is an amateur naturalist and photographer, leading guided walks across the Mosses.

Barry will relate the story of how, around 10,000 years ago, the Mosses were covered by an ice sheet 1 kilometre thick, since when there have been many geological changes, culminating in a lowland raised peat bog, the third largest in the U.K. The focus today is on the part it plays as a carbon store in the control of climate change. The Mosses are also a very special wildlife habitat, with rare and unusual flora and fauna.

We hope you will join us for what should be a very interesting evening.
