The weekly ADCA coffee morning at Thornton House will take place tomorrow (Friday) morning from 10.00am. The featured speaker this week will be Ralph Warburton, who will describe (perhaps fittingly given the date) the history of Audlem Cemetery.

#Ralph's outline of his talk
"I will cover the very early beginnings way back in 1872, when the land was acquired as a need for a non denominational burial ground. I will cover the price paid for the land and the subsequent build of the marvellous chapels, which are acknowledged as one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic in the country.

"I will move on to cover the very first burial in 1874 with names and location and the further purchase of land as the demand grew in the early 20th century.

"Then the discovery of the forgotten paupers graves hidden under brambles and nettles for decades. The plans to have a permanent memorial to these forgotten men, women and children, buried as they were on the " parish" – in multiple graves and in just a sheet.

"To cover the war graves we have and the way in which the War Graves commission come to still care for these graves . On to how the cemetery has grown over the last close on 140 years and to discuss just when it will be full.

"And much more......"
