ADAS involves the children in growing vegetables

Ralph Warburton of ADAS writes: "As part of our efforts in Community activity, each year we give a seedling plant to all the children at St James' School. This is given out in late May so that the children can grow them on through the summer weeks.

"This year I gave each a seedling Giant Japanese Onion plant which produces superb flavoursome vegetables and real show stoppers. Yesterday, Friday, I went to the assembly at the school, and addressed all the 200 children, after having judged their efforts on the day before.

"There were about 100 onions there for me to view, ranging from those measuring 4cm across to big ones of 15cm! A wonderful show by the children. The winners were:

Lucy Maguiness- year 2

Seth Hardy – Year 3

Abigail Poole – Year 4

Scott Hardy – Year 5

Mathew Hughes – Year 6

Elliot Hughes – Year 6

"On questioning those with the huge vegetables, it appears liberal doses of cow muck played a very important part!

"A loud cheer was given by all when I said that next year we would go for growing a pumpkin! It's a lovely way of involving the children in a communtiy activity – and good fun too."
