A cyclist killed on the A530 near Burleydam has been named by police who have arrested a man who is being held in custody and questioned today.

Stewart Gandy, 65, from Wistaston near Crewe was in a collision with a lorry as he cycled towards Whitchurch, near Aston, when the accident happened.

He was about to visit his uncle, Harry Knapper, in Audlem and would have been turning off the A530 shortly but was struck some way before the A525 junction.

Stewart had been a very keen cyclist in his youth and had won numerous events and awards. He had taken up cycling again and, Harry tells us, was really enjoying the sport again and had bought lots of new equipment and clothing.

Police have arrested a man in Wigan in connection with the incident and he is being questioned by police today.

A police spokeswoman said: "Officers have now traced a lorry believed to be involved in the collision and inquiries are continuing at this time. A 36-year-old was arrested in Wigan this afternoon. He remains in custody."

The driver of the lorry failed to stop at the scene and Cheshire Police are still appealing for help from anybody who saw the incident.

Police say trained family support officers are comforting Mr Gandy's family as relatives took to social media networks to appeal to any witnesses to come forward.

The incident happened at about 1.40pm on Tuesday close to Baddeley Bridge. Police closed the busy A530 road for several hours in both directions while forensic examinations were carried out.

Police say the lorry involved may have been a light colour with blue or green markings on the sides and anyone who saw a vehicle of that description in the area at the time is asked to contact police.

Anyone who witnessed what happened or has any information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 453 of 12 November. Information can also be passed on anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
