At this coming Thursday's History Society meeting, we hope to listen to a tape of Jack Nield, formerly of The Ash on Woodhouse Lane. Albert Edwards, now living in Windmill Drive, conducted the interview and we are very grateful to him.

Jack was born in 1906 and this was recorded in 1993 so he was about 87 then, he lived to more than 100. We shall listen to one side of about 45 minutes.

He covers among other things:-

  • a spark from the steam threshing machine starts a fire in 1912 and they have to send by horse to get the fire engine from the village drawn by horses which have to be found and caught first!
  • The German baron (Bertie von Trutschler) leaves Holly farm in a hurry at start of WW1
  • He sees a train load of mules at Crewe station bound for the Western front
  • Taking produce to Market Drayton to sell
  • trapping rabbits to make himself some pocket money
  • servants with their clothes in a tin box standing on the street at Market Drayton on New Year's Day to be hired for the year (still going in 1914)
  • the importance of the railway and the gradual introduction of cars
  • lots about horses
  • Audlem Badminton club
  • the Yew trees planted near his farm
  • Gipsies
  • watercress beds

It's 7.15pm for 7.30pm at the Scout & Guide Hall on Thursday 21st February. Guests are very welcome at £2. This is a change to our previous announced programme due to unforeseen circumstances. We hope to hear about American Presidents at a later date.
