Thursday 6 September

Nantwich and Rural Care Community are hosting an awareness day for local people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

COPD is the name for a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties because the lungs have become inflamed, damaged and narrowed -- normally through smoking and sometimes through air pollution.

The British Lung Foundation reports around two per cent of the whole population -- 4.5 per cent of all people aged over 40 -- live with diagnosed COPD, although there may be many more undiagnosed cases. In terms of diagnosed cases, this makes COPD the second most common lung disease in the UK after asthma.

All patients diagnosed with COPD and registered with a GP in Nantwich and Rural have been sent an invitation to this event. The purpose of the day is to help patients to manage their condition and will include:

  • Understanding the symptoms of COPD
  • Recognising early signs and when to act
  • Explaining support systems and services available locally including self care
  • Speaking to the clinicians who provide COPD care.

There will be a range of healthcare professionals at the event who will be on hand to talk to patients about their care and the support available.

The event is very informal with tea and coffee provided, so people are welcome to drop in at any point, or stay for the whole afternoon.

The event is open from 12.30 to 4pm on Thursday 6 September at Church View Primary Care Centre, Nantwich, CW5 5NX. For more information please contact Natalie Sneyd at NHS South Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group on 07956 380317 or email natalie.sneyd@nhs.net.
