The History society is organising various events to mark the start of WW1 one hundred years ago this year.

First there is the May talk on the origins of the war by Bob Cartwright. Given all the TV coverage and new books this year, we are promised a different angle on one of the most intriguing historical puzzles of all time and which has also shaped the modern world to this day.

Then we hope that everyone will look out and dust off any family items they have, including photos and postcards to share with everyone. They do not have to have a local connection but of course we will be extra interested if they do!

We are holding a get together at 7.00pm on Thursday May 29th at the home of David and Elizabeth Huntbach in Vicarage Gardens. Items can be brought along and will be photographed and recorded. Stories that go with them will be noted. If unable to attend
this meeting then a member of the History Society could visit your home with their camera.

Then in September the meeting will tell about some of the things we have found that happened in Audlem by reading the old newspapers and researching on the web.

We hope by then we will have enough material to stage a display in the local churches around Remembrance Day. We have a display case which would keep small items safe but will quite understand if exhibiting a photograph is preferable.

One of the latest finds is this photo of the convalescent soldiers in front of Raven House Adderley which was used as a hospital. And another of a soldier at the reins of a horsedrawn hayrake probably at Hawksmoor.

Some of the soldiers enjoyed their time in the country so much that they took up farming and their descendants are still in the vicinity.
