Wrenbury and District Railway Club

The members of the Wrenbury & District Model railway club held their 6th and most successful Open Doors event recently. The entire village hall was filled with a variety of gauges and layouts, owned and constructed both by the club and its members.

Visitor numbers were up and given the increase in exit-door donations plus complementary comments in the Visitors Book they must have been impressed with the variety of displays. Those visitors had travelled from as far afield as Birmingham, Leigh, Mold, Stoke, Ellesmere, Chester, Shrewsbury and Telford.

On arrival they saw the first public running of the club's 0 Gauge layout 'Wrenmere' supported by the attendance of the district representative of the 0 Gauge Guild Derek Mundy. Derek chatted to anyone showing interest in that aspect of the hobby whilst displaying items of rolling stock he had constructed.

The 00 section of the club showed a greatly extended layout using 6 modular boards owned by members. These are all constructed to the NMRA British Standard allowing them to be linked together in various configurations. This concept was also demonstrated separately using Pete Hollinshead's detailed example of how much you can fit into the 48inch x 20 inch modular board dimensions. To assist anyone in the modular concept the club have manufactured a metal template which sets the 2 through running tracks precisely.Additionally these layouts were supported by the 00 layout 'Patdench-on-Sea', a D Day inspired layout full of eye catching effects to impress all ages of visitors.

There were three N Gauge layouts, a 009 layout under construction showing how spiral track-work can be achieved and a fine display of Scale 1 locomotives and rolling stock produced by master model engineer Neil Rose, a Wrenbury club member.

The catering was carried out by four wives of members who also achieved their best sales result with specific cakes being requested by returning visitors and appreciative comments in the Visitors Book.

To keep the club momentum going on Sunday the 7th three of the members took two of the portable modular boards plus sound chipped locomotives, to the first ever Wrenbury Transport Festival held on the field at the Cotton Arms. This event has transferred here from the site at the Elephant in Shavington where it ran successfully for 9 years.

The club will next take portable layouts to the Nantwich Societies event on the 20th of July and the Audlem Festival of Transport on the 28th of July. They hope to see you there.
