Last week, Probus members were richly entertained by Philip Harrison talking about "Building Paddy's Wigwam", Liverpool's second and iconic cathedral completed in 1967.

As ever with Probus speakers, members were struck by the strange coincidences in life which have important and far reaching effects upon careers and life choices.

Philip told the story of how as a newly qualified Architect in the 60s he was seeking openings with architectural businesses based in London. By chance, he passed the head office of the firm who had recently won the competition to design the new Liverpool Cathedral. He was attracted in by a "magnificent pair of legs behind the reception desk" and, to cut a long story short, was offered a post and ultimately became the Resident Architect for the cathedral project.

He told many fascinating and humorous stories about the building of the cathedral and the personalities involved but never told us what happened to the legs in the head office. Inevitably, he was asked, and what we all wanted to hear was that he married them but unfortunately they sank without trace.

Not all stories have a perfect ending.
