As regular readers will know, Audlem was successful once again this year in the Community Pride competition, so much so that the village won the 'Best Kept' award for a third year in a row. Audlem Online has now been sent a copy of the judges' comments, which we are sure will be of interest. The section headers apply to all communities so, for example in Section 2, the judges did not discover a railway station in Audlem – unfortunately.

Section 1: Appearance of shops, banks, estate agents, shop window displays. Condition of paved areas and parking areas. This was all very good. The few shops were tidy with reasonably good window displays. The condition of paved and parking areas were very good.

Section 2: Railway station, bus shelters, telephone kiosks, public toilets, playgrounds, notice-boards, public car parks.

The bus shelter was excellent. The telephone kiosk was tidy as was the public lavatory.

Little Heath playground and the other recreational facilities were well above average.

The two diorama signs are a superb addition to this village.

Section 3: Public houses, restaurants, cafes (including parking areas), garden centres, industrial units, town halls, government offices, libraries, medical centres, village halls, other meeting places and their surroundings.

The 3 pubs were all in excellent condition with The Bridge pub open on the judges' 3rd visit.

The Public Hall had just been painted and the Methodist Chapel had finished its exterior work. They deserve their mark.

The Scout and Guide HQ needed weeding on 2 occasions but the border looked a little tidier on our 3rd visit.

The ground around the Medical Centre was very good, as was indeed the whole of that area between the recycling centre and the Public Hall.

Section 4: Sports and social clubs, war memorials, other memorial and historical artefacts, churchyards, cemeteries, public parks, gardens, children's play areas.

The war memorial and other historical artefacts were very good and add history to the village.

The churchyard was superb – it was a pleasure seeing it.

Parks, gardens and play areas were another three fine aspects of Audlem village.

Section 5: Tidiness of verges, hedges, traffic islands. Floral displays, allotments, ponds, streams, canals.

There it is – the canal that gives Audlem that extra edge. It was tidy, busy with barges and people, i.e. a great day out for all those there. The tidiness of the village is noticeable but the judges would want to see more floral displays.

There were flowerpots by the mill stone that contained dead spring flowers – in mid June? The shops and pubs could also have added more hanging baskets and flowerpots.

Section 6: Litterbins, graffiti, chewing gum, dog fouling, weeds.

This was indeed the greatest surprise to the judges. There were plenty of litterbins around, and no rubbish to be seen! The recycling area was tremendous, with absolutely no litter on the ground.

The judges saw no graffiti, no dog fouling, no chewing gum to speak about – and very few weeds. Commendable!
