WHAT AN AFTERNOON WE HAD!

Last Saturday afternoon saw the second of the regular acoustic music sessions in the Shroppie Fly. And what a superb afternoon of music and entertainment it was. As well as the usual suspects from south Cheshire, there were performers from Whitchurch, Ellesmere and Oswestry areas.

By the 2pm start time the main area in the pub was packed, and the music flowed continuously (as did the beer) until 5pm. This was "fun" folk music at its communal best: where else would you hear My Darling Clementine sung to the tune of Bread of Heaven?". There were around 30 musicians and singers, and the rest of the pub was equally full.

A rough tally of the musical side showed 7 guitars, 7 fiddles, 5 melodeons, 7 whistles flutes & recorders, 2 ukuleles, 2 bodhrans (Irish drum), bones, hurdy-gurdy, Northumbrian pipes, mandolin, and 7 singers. A veritable folk orchestra!

As before "the audience" (the rest of the pub) seemed to enjoy music, and quite a few people walking the towing path outside heard the music and dived into the pub. There again, quite a few might of heard the music and hurried past...

As someone commented: "what a great afternoon, just like the Lord Combermere used to be on a Monday night 20 years ago".

Thanks to Mike & Dale for hosting us: next session is Saturday 10 February, 2pm.
