Have you ever wondered where the name "upper and lower case" names for letters came from? Joe Sheldon of Audlem Printers recently sent us this explanation:
Upper and Lower Case
I started my printing career as an apprentice compositor, arranging metal type in order to be sent to the letterpress printing presses.
The type was in wooden cases, along the top of the cases were the capital letters and lower down the case were the 'lower' case letters – that is where we get Upper and Lower case!
