Time to Remember, Reflect and Say Thank You
Children across school have been immersed in learning about the importance of memories, remembering and reflecting as part of our Remember Week in school this week.
Our Year 6 children led an assembly on Tuesday, sharing poignant and thoughtful prayers they had written centred on the themes of bravery, sacrifice, suffering and peace which helped us all reflect on the focus of our two minutes silence.
In Year 1 and 2 the children have been using the book Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge to discuss their memories. They have made special memory boxes to store their precious memories and written about some of the questions they have raised such as 'Who and what are we remembering?' and 'Why do we wear Poppies?' Mrs Richardson also shared special memories of her Grandpa with both classes.
All of our Key Stage 2 children travelled to Tatton Park on Tuesday afternoon to watch a fantastic performance of 'Silent Night' based on World War I and the Christmas Truce. All of the children have followed this trip up in class in a variety of imaginative ways including drama and diary writing.
Ruby and Diamond classes were visited by Barbara Fisher on Thursday, who talked to them about being evacuated from Poland and her memories of war. This has been followed up today with a visit from Maureen Morgan and John Whitehead who kindly shared some of the Historical Society's artefacts and stories after our planned visit to their exhibition was postponed due to the very wet weather last Friday.
On Wednesday, our Year 6 children were taken on a tour of Audlem Cemetery by Ralph Warburton and saw the war graves of local soldiers who died during World War 1.
They have also spent their guided reading sessions this week reading historical sources such as letter, diaries and recounts of soldiers during the Christmas Truce WW1. They have become true experts on World War 1 and are now using drama to 'experience the trenches' and 'take part in the Christmas Truce' themselves to inspire their writing as soldiers in the trenches.
Ruby class have linked their recent work on newspapers to write reports about the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the catalyst to the start of the First World War.
Many classes have also produced some wonderful poppy artwork using a range of materials; Amethyst class have painted large and small poppies whilst Amber class have used a range of media such as paint, pastels and tissue paper. Artwork from our special Remember Week will be displayed around school over the coming weeks.
We are all dressed to impress on Friday as we fund raise for Children in Need! Our School Council have organised the day with teachers dressing as pupils and children as teachers. Their hard work has been worth it as they have raised a fantastic £116.75 for this charity. Thank you for your contributions.
Thanks to all of the parents and other family members who joined us on Tuesday morning for our Active Audlem session, luckily the weather was kind to us and it was wonderful to see so many children and relatives joining in!
Our football team played two matches in the Autumn League Shield yesterday and after beating Highfields 2-0 and losing to Stapeley Broad Lane 1-0 they managed to reach the semi finals of this competition – well done to you all!
This was their first match sporting their new kit provided by FASA and they really stood out from the crowd in their bright orange strip!
As the Big Switch On draws nearer, FASA are busy preparing for the event by organising a Tombola stall, which will be set up in the village to raise money for our school. To collect items for the stall, we will be holding a Non Uniform Day in school next Friday (21st). We are asking families to donate a bottle or chocolates for the stall on this day. Thank you for your support with this.
Some of our Key Stage 2 children will be singing on the Church steps as part of the Switch On – we will be sending home letters about this next week.
FASA will once again be leading children and parents in a parade into the village from school on Big Switch On night and they will be sending out further details about this special evening soon.
Children are really enjoying the new clubs on offer at ABC. Needlework, Street Dance, Autumn Survival and Oopsadaisydoodle activities are being thoroughly enjoyed. Don't worry if you have missed week 1 and 2, you can still sign up for a block of the last 4 weeks.
Pre-school places for 2 year olds – names are being taken for our January intake. Call 01270 669050 for more information about the clubs or pre school places.
We are in the process of developing a prayer ribbon display area in our school hall and would be grateful for any donations of ribbons of any colour, length or width. If you have any ribbons to spare, please send them into our school office so we can use them for this project. Many thanks.
As part of our focus on Maths this year, we have subscribed to 'Sumdog', a free programme where the children can practise their maths skills through different activities and games. All children have been given individual logins today and a letter providing further information about this resource. We would value your feedback about this over the coming weeks and months.
We sent our agenda overview out to all families yesterday for our next Parent Forum meeting which takes place on Wednesday 19th November from 9.15am – 10.15am (refreshments available from 9am).
Our School Nurse and Lynsey from ABC will be joining us for part of this meeting and I hope many of you will be able to join us for this too.
If you are unable to attend but have comments about any of the agenda items, please complete the slip at the bottom of the agenda overview and return it to school by Monday 17th so that your comments can be included in the meeting.
