Three years ago, Audlem won the Government accolade of the most community minded village in the whole of England. All fifty English counties had put forward their top village for the award yet Audlem came out as the undisputed Number One.

Yesterday morning, in a torrential downpour, it was easy to understand that success. As the rain came down in sheets, an ADAS committee member – who shall remain nameless to save his blushes – kept at work preparing the flower bed outside the Lord Combermere's car park for its summer planting. When asked why he wasn't sheltering from the storm, his answer was: "It's easier to pull the weeds when it's wet!"

If Defra, the Government department that made the award to Audlem in 2005, had been judging the village again yesterday, there's little doubt the title would have been retained.
