Test system at the bottom of this story

Thank you to all those that have contacted Audlem Online about what appears to be a deterioration in broadband speeds recently.

One resident says – and these are excerpts from an informative email: "My connection almost died on Friday so I called BT. When you go through all the options and eventually get to pressing 2 for broadband technical help there is a message saying that there is a problem with broadband and customers may get intermittent connections but they're working on it – which means that they do know things aren't working well everywhere.

"Eventually we ran a speedtest on the official BT site. The test showed a good result. It turns out our problem is a router problem not a BT line or service problem and with the help of a friend I have now fixed the router problem and our broadband is back to normal.

The only thing you might want to note is that the BT broadband technician said he had increased our speed permission (or somesuch term). Apparently, the speed permission is automatically changed depending on service quality and he said it was set a bit low, which might suggest that there had been a problem in our area, though the technician himself didn't say that."

John Tilling, a member of the Audlem Online webteam, published an article on the Homepage on Friday. It's worth a read and describes a new test the webteam has developed to check broadband speeds. This will allow us to build up a picture of what is really happening and then to put the pressure on to obtain an improved service.

Good quality broadband is important and should be as good in rural areas as in cities – after all, we have to pay just as much! A decent speed is also vital for many rural-based businesses.

To take part in the surveyPlease click on "run test". The test will be run (this will take a few seconds) and the resulting data added to the database. The details of location are simply to allow us to determine whether there are particularly "bad" areas of the village, but individual anonimity will always be preserved.

The data recorded for each test will include

  • date & time
  • location (street)
  • computer type
  • operating system
  • ISP provider
  • browser type
  • download speed for test data set
It is of more importance to do this test at various different times of day, or different days in the week, rather than repeating the test over and over in quick succession.
