Have you ever wondered why the Bhurtpore Inn at Aston is so called?

Or have you come across the Combermere Bridge or Combermere Hotel in Shimla, India?  Cricket fans might have heard of the Combermere School in Barbados?

Find the answers and much more from Dinah Andrew's talk in the Scout & Guide Hall at 7.30 pm on Thursday at the History Society meeting (visitors £2 or a year's membership starting January – £10 for 8 talks on local history).

Lord Combermere led such a full life that Dinah had to make three talks out of it. This is the second one covering much of his work abroad.

It is hard to imagine the effect that these great national but local heroes must have had on the local population. The Duke of Wellington, Lord Hill and Lord Combermere passed through our village and celebrated victories with a banquet in Whitchurch.

It would have been like both Monty and Winston Churchill visiting!

Don't miss this instalment – the next one may be in a year's time.
