Alex Denby has written articles for AudlemOnline about life at school and Durham University and is one of youngest regular correspondents.

On Saturday 7th December, I will be doing a 5k Fun Run in Durham for the Young Persons' Project.

I would be extremely grateful for any and all donations you could make to the project, as it is a fantastic scheme that makes an incredible impact on disadvantaged young people in the North East.

I am the Director and thus in charge of YPP for 2013-14. It is something I'm incredibly passionate about as I have seen the amazing impact it has on the participating students. Please get in touch with me if you have any questions or want to know more about the project! (alexdenby@gmail.com)

The JustGiving page is: http://www.justgiving.com/Bethany-Clarke1

Please ignore the fact it says for 'Bethany Clarke'; Beth is one of YPP's Fundraising Director and set up the page. This page has been set up for all YPP volunteers to fundraise together on, so please state my name in your comment if you donate, so that we know which volunteer has gotten people to donate in their name.

All of the money pledged on the site will go straight to Young Persons' Project through the Durham Universities Charities Kommittee (DUCK), Durham University's charity body.

YPP

The Young Persons' Project (YPP) is a programme designed to raise the aspirations of young people from disadvantaged North East schools, primarily through confidence-building exercises, with the ultimate goal of encouraging every one of them to fulfil their potential and improve their chances of securing a place at Durham, and/or other Universities.

We work closely with Year 10 pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds at Academy360, Sunderland and St Hild's CofE in Hartlepool. Academically, both schools have been well below the national average in terms of the percentage of pupils receiving 5+ A*-C grades at GCSE level.

As volunteers on the Young Persons' Project, we have found that this is often due to a lack of role models and inspiration in their own lives, which in turn may reflect that many participating pupils are from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The YPP aims to change these trends by inspiring and building self-belief in the school pupils on the project, using public speaking, creativity, leadership and teamwork as tools to that end.

A team of 30 Van Mildert students run the YPP, including six students who form the executive committee charged with liaising with the schools, running school sessions, organising the residential, managing finances and fundraising. As Director I head the executive committee and the project as a whole.

Since the outset, 10 years ago, the YPP has been, and continues to be, funded entirely by charitable support. Thank you for all your support!
