Almost exactly a year ago, Probus members were taken on a virtual train journey to the Arctic Circle by our guest speaker, Jeremy Nicholls, who returns this week (Thurs Feb 12) to give us a different perspective of Scandinavia’s incredible majestic beauty and history, with what some might find surprising industrial facts.
Jeremy, an Audlem resident well-known for his knowledge and love of history, and for his associations with Nantwich Museum, travelled by train through much of Scandinavia and Finland in the 1970s and 1990s, becoming an even more frequent visitor since 2014 with family living in Sweden.
His fascination with the region’s railway network has never waned. He says: “It’s played a vital role in the history and economic development of the Nordic countries. Railway lines stretch up to and beyond the Arctic Circle, forming critical links in their economy, defence and security and a lifeline for remote populations.”
Just how critical, the retired professional and business men and women making up the Probus membership, together with guests and visitors, will find out as Jeremy’s illustrated presentation takes us on a 1,300 mile rail journey from Narvik, in northern Norway, to Malmö in the far south of Sweden.
He tells us: “Whether it's the 24/7 movement of iron ore from the world's largest mine to the port, or keeping modern service- and knowledge-based cities moving, the steel wheel on a steel rail is crucial.”
