The Long ARS (Audlem Ramblers Society) walk this coming Saturday is in Snowdonia and is organised by Peter Kay.

This is Peter's description of the walk:

A circular walk from Llanberis over the grass covered Moel Eilio, Foel Gron, Foel Goch and Moel Cynghorion.
Start time 8.00am, meeting on Audlem car park; walk length 8.75 miles: ascent 3160ft; 4-boot.

The walk starts at the Snowdon Railway car park in Llanberis. Before village proper coming in from south you pass the theLegacy Royal Victoria Hotel on the right. Immediately after the hotel is a mini-roundabout. Turn left and immediately right into the car park. The cost is £6.

There is a small car park further on on the right signposted £4 but I found it full. We meet outside the booking office at the station.

There is a long initial climb to the top of Moel Eilio and several steep ascents and descents. Near the end of the walk a smart walker-friendly licenced cafe awaits.

Two thirds of the way round the walk, at Bwylch Maes Gwm, there is an easy return route to Llanberis along a wide track and a small road. This slightly shortens the walk and avoids 700 ft of climbing and a steep grassy descent.

For those wanting to do more there is an attractive option of continuing from Moel Cynghorion down to Bwlch Cwm Brwynog, then steeply up Maen-Du 'r Arddu under the Clogwyn cliffs , past Llyn Du 'r Arddu and then picking up a track to meet the Llanberis path from Snowdon.

This increases the milage to 11 miles and the ascent to 4000ft. For the most adventurous an ascent of Snowdon by the Ranger path from Bwlch Cwm Brwynog is possible. (13 miles, ascent 5000ft)

The recce day was fine but, despite coming after a very rainy period, the going was firm and we encountered almost no mud or peat. Apart from the recent recce I have in the past walked most of the alternative routes mentioned.

There is a strenuous (9 miles 2500 ft ascent) wet weather alternative that keeps off the tops.

Meet at Audlem car park at 8.00am a week on Saturday 12th May.
