August's Short-ARS walk takes place slightly further afield in Staffordshire and is a circular walk, mainly across farmland, of slightly over 6 miles. Our journey takes us past two places of historical interest.

The walk commences by the village of Hanbury approxiamately a 50/55 minute drive away and almost immediately passes the site of the largest non-nuclear explosion in the second world war. The Fauld Explosion occurred when an underground munition dump exploded leaving a very impressive crater. Seismographs recorded the explosion in Casablanca! Details of the full story can be read at the link beneath the photo.

We then proceed across country to the edge of the village of Tutbury and get good views of Tutbury Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned for many years. Again for those interested further details are available at http://www.tutburycastle.com

Following a short stroll by the River Dove we then head back to Hanbury across farmland passing by the other side of the Fauld Crater.

When I had a look at this walk in March, conditions were a bit muddy underfoot in places but, hopefully, in August conditions will be fine. The walk is relatively flat with, from memory, only one slight incline to negotiate, although there are numerous stiles.

If anyone is interested Hanbury is only about a 15/20 minute drive from The National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas and if you want to continue the historical theme it is well worth a visit.

The meeting place is the main car park in Audlem at 9.30am on Saturday August 28th.
