Debris brought over from the Sahara by Hurricane Ophelia caused the sun today to have a reddish tinge. Forest fires on the Iberian Peninsula Peninsula also contributed to the airborne particles carried over us by the storm.
Rather than tinting the light, the material in the atmosphere caused the shorter wavelength of light – blue – to be scattered meaning that the sun appeared during mid day as it usually does during sunset, when the effect occurs due to light having to travel a greater distance – and therefore through more atmosphere – before being observed.
