We reprint today, suitably updated, the article written by Steph Richardson after Ralph suffered a major stroke in 2023.
He may have been short in stature, but he was a colossus of a man. Ralph and his wife Joan moved to our locality to ensure that their retirement involved giving back to the community as they had already achieved a rewarding life for themselves.
His innovative and entrepreneurial initiatives were strongly influential in village achievements and have resulted in numerous community awards over many years.
Despite his own intermittent ill health and tragic personal loss when Joan died, Ralph carried on providing outstanding services to our local community due to his personal energy, positive initiatives and determination to make our village a better place to live.
He embraced a huge extent and range of community based projects. He dedicated an enormous amount of his time to all of these, underpinning the fabric of our village due to his wide connections, business expertise and entrepreneurial skills which he shared with others enabling them to work more effectively.
Whenever necessary, he would step into the breach, never forgetting the importance of helping and maintaining our small businesses which are such a vital part of our small community.
He was also aware of the importance of engaging with and managing the media effectively for the benefit of these village projects.
He had a keen perception and response to both the social and emotional needs of individuals within our community, and he included our children in his projects, in order to develop their enthusiasm and willingness to also become a vibrant part of our village.
Helen Lloyd and I had the privilege of interviewing local people and wading through a mountain of information to nominate Ralph for his well deserved BEM. This included thank you letters from several charities for whom he raised huge amounts of money. Some of his achievements were not necessarily won prettily, but he always got things done.
Rest in Peace Ralph, your legacies will carry on.
