In 2005, 2007 and 2009, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Cadets have successfully constructed three sustainable schools for the young people in villages of Ghana.

Next year, the tradition will continue as young people from across Cheshire (including two cadets from the Audlem unit: Sam Morley and David Vernon) work together in a life changing opportunity to experience the poverty stricken African country of Ghana by working for two weeks of sunburnt labour, constructing a school for the benefit of young African children.

Before the cadets can access this adventure, they have an equally testing challenge; they each must raise £2500-£3000, which will provide the building materials for the school. Fitting fundraising around exams has proven to be difficult in past years and their position in the team is at stake.

The project will include:

  • Engaging with the registered charity Ghana Outlook to build a school.
  • Leaving a long lasting self-sustainable asset enabling young African children to develop a 'self help' approach to reducing poverty.
  • Raising the awareness of Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service Cadets to cultural diversity.
  • Exposing young people to the realities of a young African person's life in poverty compared to their own lifestyle.
It is a challenging venture for all cadets to raise the required funds, even for such an important cause. But the weight falls heavily onto the shoulders of the Audlem Cadet Unit, having to raise £5000 for the second consecutive project, having successfully had two cadets involved on both occasions.

They are grateful for the huge response in past years, but the funds are equally essential for this generation of cadets.

As well as upcoming organised events and sponsorships, it is hoped that the people of Audlem will appreciate the importance of this project and donate in full support of the cause.

Every penny sent goes directly to the building materials of the school. Further information can be found at www.cheshirefire.gov.uk. Donations can be sent to the provided address or you can contact me, a participating cadet, directly at sammorley88@hotmail.co.uk">sammorley88@hotmail.co.uk.
