Raft Race back – at last!

It's hard to believe with Audlem's busy Festival season in the past decade but 25 years ago, apart from the Carnival, The Audlem Raft Race from Bridge 80 to the centre of the village was one of the few events that brought the crowds of any size into the village.

Few will forget Winston and his (highly effective) water cannon or some of the crazy monocyle-rafts put together by John, then of the Canal Shop which inevitably ended up proceeding in ever-decreasing circles. Sadly, with a mixture of Health & Safety culture and a few fall-outs along the way, the Raft Race disappeared and one of the most characterful village events faded into history.

How good then to see a Raft Race reconstituted on Sunday at the Audlem RNLI Festival held over the weekend at Overwater Marina. The teams competing look keen to win and are very well kitted out to do so.

Our thanks to Derek Jones, Ken Maple and Berny Lunt for the photos. Do click on each photo to see them in greater detail and in the correct format.

More tomorrow – including the Raft Race winners.
