They came from as far as Edinburgh, Lincolnshire, London, the Lake District, from far and near – over 2,500 enjoyed a fabulous Audlem night of entertainment as the 6th Audlem Proms on the Park proved to be the best yet and a triumph for the organisers, the Audlem Special Events Team (ASET).

On a perfect summer's evening, with not a cloud in the sky, the scene was set with everyone enjoying their picnics – and the occasional glass of wine – to the music of the Bill Basey Big Band and then the Crewe Male Voice Choir from the magnificent stage. Ninety minutes of music from the shows and the world of films then followed from the resplendently uniformed Band of the Kings Division before Director of Music, Captain Richard Watterson, led his troops and the audience into the traditional Last Night of the Proms. The flags waved and 2,500 voices roared out Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and the Pomp and Circumstance March No 1, Land of Hope and Glory. As the music faded to huge applause, the countdown started and exactly on cue the night sky to the west was lit with a spectacular fireworks display.

ASET was initially formed six years ago to provide Audlem with fabulous events like this. It's all a huge credit to the ASET team – Des Guerin, Ken Jones, Dave Joynson, Paddy Kenshole, John Langston, Nigel Mottershead, Andrew Smith and Ralph Warburton – helped by many other volunteers on the night. They are dedicated to making Audlem a vibrant place and last night they brought enormous pleasure to thousands.

It's helped to make the village the current Cheshire Village of the Year; the North of England Village of the Year and the Defra National Village of the Year for Building Community Life. If the judges of these competitions had been at the Proms last night, and witnessed community spirit on this scale, they would have given Audlem all three awards for keeps! Congratulations ASET. You did yourselves proud. You did Audlem proud.
