On Wednesday evening members of Audlem and District Probus Club set off for the heart of Cheshire (--- as the advertisement says) to visit the Joseph Heler Cheese making plant. True to the advert it is set in lush rolling green fields with grazing cows, but the plant itself is a very modern impressive operation.

Cheese making first started in 1957 by "grandmother" from the farm house which still exists and has grown in to what is now a major operation taking in some 130 million litres of milk per year and producing 30-40, 000 tonnes of cheese of some 45 different varieties which is supplied to supermarkets and wholesalers both locally and throughout the world.

Unusually, what was once a waste product, the whey, from the cheese making process is now filtered, treated and supplied to manufacturers of protein drinks.

It was certainly a fascinating visit which concluded with a tasting session of examples of their delicious cheese varieties.
President Peter Bourne, expressed the Club's thanks for an excellent tour by senior members of the Helers'Team.

This was followed by a buffet and beer at the Lord Combermere put on by Alan and Jo which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Many thanks go to Peter Robinson for organising the visit.
