Power incident raises questions

Yesterday's story on Audlem Online about the electricity pole that fell across the A525 in Buerton with a live cable has raised a number of questions.

The power cable's collapse across a busy road appears to be due to the wooden pole having rotted away. That should make any observer wonder how many other such poles are in a similar condition. And why wasn't the problem spotted before it could so easily have caused a tragedy?

It's not as if the power companies are strapped for cash! Electricity prices have shot up in the last few years despite wholesale prices being relatively low.

A reader also points out that it's strange that, here in the south of Cheshire, our electricity is largely supplied by a company called Scottish Power. On the weekend of the fiercely contested Calcutta Cup rugby match between England and Scotland, he wonders whether a dominant electricity supplier called English Power would be warmly embraced north of the border?
