Coffee and biscuits will be served at the Audlem Scout & Guide Hall tomorrow, Saturday, between 10 am and 12 noon before the major refurbishment work starts next week. The £40,000 overhaul is the first major improvement since the 19th Century and will include new flooring, windows, toilets, suspended ceiling, upgraded heating and work on the building's fabric.

Christine Cottrell, the hall committee's chairman, said: "All this work has to be completed within the school summer break so very close contact with all our contractors is vital. It is interesting to realise that this is the first full refit since the hall was built in the 1840's."

The projected completion date is 11th September. Funding has seen a £20,000 grant awarded from WREN (Waste Cycling Environmental Ltd), Cheshire Rural Trust, Audlem Parish Council, Crewe & Nantwich Borough Council and local residents who raised £5,000. Anyone who wishes to help can call Christine Cottrell on 01270 811454.
