Peak District walk

The June ARS (Audlem Ramblers Society) walk on Saturday 13th is a 10.5 mile stroll around the Goyt Valley on the edge of the Peak District. ( A shorter option of approximately 8.00 miles with about 200 metres less climbing is available)

The walk allows us to explore some Victorian ruins, graveyard and a shrine, some mysterious moors and also scale the highest point of Cheshire at 559 metres. In addition, hopefully the rhododendrons will still be in full flower.

The ruins and graveyard are what remains of Erwood Hall, the family home of the Grimshawe family, which was demolished when one of the reservoirs was built. The shrine was built by the same family to honour a favourite nanny, Senorita Dolores de Bergria, who died in 1899.

The walk first explores the ruins of the home before heading up to the shrine, We then climb an easy ridge which is the county boundary between Cheshire and Derbyshire (nb can be a bit boggy in wet weather) over Cat Tor and up to Shining Tor. At 559 metres this is the highest point in Cheshire and I am advised the 9th highest of the English county tops.

We then descend down into the valley* before climbing up the the other side onto Burbage Edge. A walk along the Edge is followed by a steep descent before we make our way back to our starting point.

* those wishing to shorten the walk can make their way down a minor road from here back to the starting point.

The full walk is about 10.5 miles with a total ascent of 650 metres and probably rates 3 boots on our measure of difficulty. Meet on Audlem car park at 8.00am.
