peak district walk

In the absence of Jean the old inefficient secretary has returned for a short spell, don't worry this isn't permanent!

Peter Kay is leading next Saturday's walk and below is his description.

The Peak District is split into two areas, the northern Dark Peak, mainly gritstone, and the southern White Peak, mainly limestone. This walk flirts with both. It starts from the Mam Nick car park near Edale in Derbyshire going south to Sparrowpit through

old mining country and returning over Rushup Edge. On a good day there should be fine views of the Kinder plateau and the Edale valley. A shorter version with more road walking was featured in the latest Walk magazine.

We shall have lunch in Sparrowpit outside the Wanted Inn unless it's raining and we need cover. The very welcoming young ladies in charge of the bar said we could use their tables. It is a walker friendly pub so no need to remove your boots. Please buy a drink
or a cake! There were some very tempting homemade ones on display on Thursday.

Notes:

Distance 9 miles, Grade 3 boots.

3 climbs one short and steep and two longer more gradual.

Plenty of stiles and some sheep. Not too much mud when we recce'd it but there was still some snow to melt.

Travel time 1.30+ hours. It's a long way but the scenery is very different.

The post code for the car park is not helpful. The post code for Sparrowpit is SK17 8ET and I will give detailed directions from there. Mam Nick is a National Trust car park and the normal charge for non-members is about £6 but as of Thursday the machine was not working with a sign inviting on-line donations.

The walk is weather dependent. It can be very bleak up there and it's a long drive to see nothing. There will be an alternative if conditions are not suitable.

Start time 8.30am from the Public Hall car park.

Peter Kay's mobile number is 07476 718185
