Mavis Smith of Madeley has already spoken to us about two of her previous works – life with the Tollets of Betley Hall and revelations from the diary of one of their governesses.
She has the ability to see the potential in original documents and the patience to transcribe them and present the information to the public.
Her latest project involves copies of four letters inserted into Tollet scrapbooks but written by three Betley soldiers who took part in the Peninsular War with Wellington against Napoleon. Such letters are few, partly because many ordinary soldiers were illiterate.
Some of these Betley letters however are well constructed and show a wide vocabulary as they describe conditions in Portugal in 1811/12. A former shoemaker, after his return
becomes a schoolmaster and local preacher in Betley. Another escorts prisoners to Australia.
Mavis has also researched other men from Betley who enlisted at this time.
Her husband Peter will explain how much of the background was found from online searches which might be of interest to those researching military or family history.
This is local history at it's best, the letters discovered also have national significance. We look forward to an interesting talk.
Scout and Guide Hall Thursday 17th April, 7.15pm for 7.30pm, all welcome, visitors £3, membership £10 with free entrance to all talks. Refreshments served.
