New signs on the canal

If you have walked along the canal towpath recently, you will have seen the new Weaver Way directional signs that have been installed. Audlem is the southern gateway to the new long-distance route for walkers and cyclists that stretches right across Cheshire via Nantwich and Middlewich to the banks of the Mersey near to Frodsham.

An Audlem team from the Parish Plan group is also working with the Weaver Valley Regional Park and Cheshire Tourism Board to create a series of interpretation boards at points along the canal describing its history, wildlife and points of interest. It's planned, subject to permission from British Waterways, to install around a dozen boards, that will be lectern shaped and positioned beside the towpath. They are to be installed at Audlem, Coole Lane, Hack Green and Nantwich.

The idea originated in Audlem as a first stage in creating a small Thomas Telford museum in the village and the six Audlem interpretation boards will focus on the canal's design and construction, Telford himself and life on the canals. The copy for several of the boards has been written by Audlem resident and historian Roger Wickson, who has a narrowboat moored in the village.
