As part of my taking on the management of this, now the best cemetery in Cheshire, I researched the records that were passed over to me.

Included in these were the ledgers of records in which the names of those who had been interred here over the years since 1874.

#Unmarked
As I dug deeper, I realised that a great number of graves – located to the very bottom of the cemetery – had no marker at all to record their passing. In fact the area of these graves was lost beneath a mass of brambles and rabbit warrens.

Having had the grounds cleared by our excellent staff, I then researched just who had been buried there and their ages and dates of death.

This resulted in a long list of people of the past, buried over the years from 1876 to 1959.

Their ages ranged from 2.5 hours to 89 years, over 70 burials. In those days, when a family could not afford a funeral, the loved ones were buried “on the Parish” – old fashioned paupers.

Many of the graves hold more than five persons.

#Stone
Last year, the Burial Committee agreed to pursue the aim of erecting a stone to record all the men, women and children who lie here. Accordingly, I approached Rogers of Nantwich with the plan. To create such a memorial is not without its problems – least of all is the size.

I am pleased to say that we believe we now have a good plan for the stone – which will have four faces, with all the names and dates carved thereon.

I am also pleased to say that we have been approached by some who wish to contribute to this considerable cost. If any others feel similarly inclined, please contact me on 07813 820157. Or by email on rjw@notrubraw.com" target="_blank">rjw@notrubraw.com

It is hoped to have the memorial in place by the middle of the year and to have a simple ceremony of dedication – inviting our Ministers to take part.

I feel sure that all who live here will be supportive of this long overdue measure.
