Parking solution proposed

In an unexpected but almost certainly welcome move, a consortium of developers and builders involved in the various housing developments in and around Audlem, have proposed a solution to the village's chronic parking problems.

The idea is to excavate an underground car park beneath the playing field which, judging by the numbers of cars accommodated on the field during the annual Transport Festival, could provide up to 200 parking spaces.

According to to the builders, who have spoken to AudlemOnline so that the public reaction to the scheme can be assessed, the sand beneath the playing field is an ideal construction material so thousands of tons that would have to be removed can then be used on the various building sites. This will offset a good proportion of the likely costs.

To maximise parking space, lighter-weight than normal reinforced concrete columns would be used, as rather than supporting the many storeys in a typical multi-storey carpark. they will only support the playing field, which would be relaid on top of the concrete roof after construction is complete..

This structure would require a weight limit but this should only mean that the field cannot be used by HGVs during the Transport Festival and the occasional obese player during the football season.
