Local MP Stephen O'Brien has met with county council chief executive Jeremy Taylor this week and handed in a petition to save Buerton Primary School. The petition has been signed by hundreds of local residents, community leaders and the school children themselves.

Stephen O'Brien said: "The loss of the school would be a massive blow to the village – all those who want to see flourishing and vibrant rural communities need to make every effort to protect vital community services such as village schools. Schools like Buerton don't just make an educational contribution, they also play an important role in the social fabric of village life."

A decision on the school's future by the county's Schools Organisation Committee was delayed this week until 14th September after the meeting was adjourned to review additional documentation.

Two days ago, Audlem Online published a plea by ex-Buerton School pupil Joseph Bloor to save the school. You can find it by clicking on 'More News' to the right once to reach 19/07/2006 under 'A passionate plea from a Buerton 'old boy''.
