I read with interest your article on Saturday. I would like to add the following – a pan shovel is what it is; 'pothery' is pronounced 'puthery'; and 'boosey' is a cow trough or manger.

Other commonly used words:-

  • Nesh – Feeling the cold.
  • Clemmed – Deprived of food or hungry.
  • Yelv – A muck fork.
  • Orts – Yesterday's leftovers. (We will have to eat the orts up)
  • Blart – Cry (Like an infant)
  • Muck hook – A tool with tines at right angle to stale to scrape the muck from the cart.
  • Tundish – A funnel.
The photo is of my late father, Bert Jones of Ash Tree Farm, Kynsal Heath, taken in 1959 by Robin Hughes, a school teacher at Audlem senior school. He was probably one of the last farmers to use shire horses in the area.
