Regular readers will recall several stories on AudlemOnline publicising a campaign to oppose a planning application for a new HGV access route to the Parkes in Monks Lane to the east of Audlem.

Campaigners, and all concerned by this plan will be pleased to hear that the application has been refused by Cheshire East councillors. This was reported at the opening of Monday's Parish Council meeting.

Concern was voiced – see the poster – that it would make Monks Lane less safe than it is already as HGVs would be using more of the road than at present. Currently the road represents the safest route between Hankelow, Bunsley Bank and Buerton and Audlem for cyclists and walkers.

Audlem Parish Council, at its December meeting which voted to oppose the application, was concerned by the damage that was likely to be caused to the road surface and drains. It was said that the road had collapsed three times already because of HGVs causing the road to be closed.

The Parish Council voted unanimously to oppose the planning application on the grounds of Highway Safety; Impact on Open Countryside; Environmental Issues – drainage and road collapse.

It seems as if Cheshire East agreed.
