Could it match the magic of Proms on the Park? That was the question. Could we live without the flag-waving finale of Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory? The answer, we are so pleased to report, was a resounding "Yes".

ASET laid on a night to remember. Relix got the party of to a fine start, fresh from a successful tour of Spain after their triumphant Audlem Festival appearance a month ago. High Society lived up to their name with great style before the stars of the West End hit the stage with a string of hits from the great musicals.

This was entertainment out of the top draw and the vast crowd responded with huge enthusiasm. Jill Nalder, Andrew Newey, Frances Fry, Stephen Weller, Tim Rogers and Lucy Newton belted out the great London West End hits. A finale with ABBA numbers from Mamma Mia! had hundreds dancing in front of the stage before a Blitz fireworks extravaganza set the seal on another memorable Audlem night.

Thousands had turned out and picnicked in the style we are accustomed to – candelabra flickered, the bubbly flowed and a great time was had by all. Yes, there were a couple of downpours, but the vast majority simply shrugged and thought: "This is England, what can you expect?" and partied on.

Colin Cliffe kept up the party spirit as compere – he suggested you send in your comments on the show to Audlem Online and a new Forum topic has opened on Midsummer Music on the Park. Al Dean and his team provided, yet again, excellent sound quality on a warm sultry night.

Amongst the thousands of visitors, it was good to see a return by the founders of the Audlem Festival, Paul and Clare Moran. After moving to Manchester after a long spell in the village, they had the choice this weekend of Glastonbury or Audlem. The weather may have been about the same, but you know where they chose!

Congratulations to ASET on a triumphant night where they packed the playing field and laid on fabulous entertainment. The yells of endorsement for a similar event next year said it all. Events like this prove what a very special place Audlem is. Can there be another village of this size that can lay on entertainment of this quality so professionally? It was, truly, a night to remember.

More pictures to come of the West Enders and the Midsummer Night over the next few days
