Mid-ARS on Saturday

Saturday August 24th

Richard Lane and I will lead the Mid-ARS walk on Saturday 24th August on Cannock Chase.

The planned Tutbury walk was recce'd but found it to be unsuitable, due to field footpaths being diverted and hemmed in by electric fences and overgrown hedges, with well grown, little walked vegetation underfoot making negotiating them very difficult.

So instead we plan a 7.5 mile walk with 600 feet of ascent on Cannock Chase, passing by many of the wartime memorials.

With magnificent views of the Derbyshire Peaks and the heather clad heathland the route takes us via Freda's Grave, the Glacial Boulder, Katyn Memorial, the Commonwealth and German Cemeteries and the WW1/WW2 Rifle Ranges, dropping down via the Sheerbrook Valley back to the start.

Starting point is the car park at Coppice Hill GR SJ979191 near the village of Brocton, just off the A34 south of Stafford, about an hour's drive from Audlem.

It is an undulating walk with a couple of ascents and descents, no stiles, dog friendly but no toilets. Though there are plenty of bushes!

Meet on Saturday morning in Audlem Car Park at 8.30 a.m.

NB All walkers must have suitable footwear and be prepared for adverse weather, carry food and water to last for the entire walk and be suitably fit for the various lengths of walk.

Non-members of ARS are welcome to come on a walk but are expected to join ARS and pay the membership fee after a trial walk or two.
